Zircon is a natural gemstone !
Stop confusing this beautiful natural stone with cubic zirconia !
It is a zirconium silicate that has a brown, green or dark red colour when extracted and changes colour when heated. Most blue stones are pastel blue, but some exceptional gems have a bright blue colour.
Zircon is also available in green, dark red, violet, yellow, brown and orange. Thanks to its high refractive index and high dispersion, zircon has great brilliance and intensity.
Zircon deposits around the world :
The main deposits are found in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Australia, Brazil, Korea, Madagascar, Mozambique, Myanmar (Burma), Niger, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.
Zircon deposits are mainly alluvial, i.e. they are located around rivers whose erosion dredges stones from the ground.
In recent years Cambodia, and in particular the Ratanakiri mine, has established itself as the world's leading producer of zircon in terms of quality, with blue zircon from this country going by the name Cambolite.
The most popular colour for zircon is blue. The more intense the blue, the higher the price. The brilliance of zircon is legendary, so it can be used as a substitute for diamonds when it is colourless.
Do you know blue zircon ?
For lovers of blue gemstones, this magnificent stone is a wise choice, even though it's not widely known by the French public. In intense blue tones, the choice of stones is limited:
- The famous Paraiba tourmaline (which fetches sky-high prices)
- Blue topaz (tampered with and irradiated, so avoid ....)
- Aquamarine (clearer and less brilliant)
Blue zircon has a high refractive index, giving it an exceptional brilliance that can easily be compared to that of a diamond.
Be careful not to confuse it with synthetic zirconium oxide, a simulacrum of diamond.
Zircon is a natural mineral called zirconium silicate.
It is one of the oldest stones known on earth, and a deposit 4.4 billion years old has been discovered in Australia. The age of zircon can be used by geologists to determine the age of the sedimentary strata in which it appears, making it a scientifically important stone.
Zircon has a good hardness, 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, but it must be handled with care.
Unfortunately for this magnificent stone, the proximity of its name to zirconium oxide, a synthetic stone, has given it a bad reputation that it does not deserve. Make no mistake, zircon is a natural stone !
And do not forget, all stones are fragile! even diamond ….
To determine the quality of a stone, color is the most important criterion.
